ZymoChem achieves commercial-scale production of key biopolymer ingredient for BAYSE BioSAP

ZymoChem, the biotech firm dedicated to developing sustainable materials for everyday products, proudly announces the successful large-scale production of a key biopolymer ingredient for its innovative first product.

This achievement follows ZymoChem's recent introduction of BAYSE™, the world’s first scalable, bio-based, microplastic-free, and biodegradable Super Absorbent Polymer (SAP), designed as a drop-in alternative to traditional, fossil-based SAPs that are essential in disposable hygiene products. By reaching multi-Metric Tons (MT) in production levels for the important biopolymer ingredient for BAYSE, along with showcasing efficiencies that confirm commercial viability, ZymoChem is set to deliver BAYSE BioSAP to customers around the globe.

Utilizing its proprietary fermentation-based manufacturing technology, ZymoChem produces ingredients that match the performance and cost benefits of conventional options while facilitating the creation of decarbonized solutions. Previously achieved at a smaller scale, the company now celebrates a significant milestone with the production of its biopolymer at a 45,000-liter capacity. With the assistance of its contract manufacturing operator (CMO), ZymoChem exceeded lab-scale performance metrics, proving the reliability of the process at an industrial scale.

Our team’s dedication to innovation and precision has enabled us to showcase biomanufacturing at scale and at unprecedented efficiencies, overcoming one of the biggest hurdles in deploying bio-based products commercially. This success brings us closer to providing high-performance, sustainable solutions for the hygiene, agriculture, cosmetics, and water treatment industries.

Following this successful scale-up, ZymoChem is starting commercial production runs with its CMO partners to build additional inventory that meets the substantial demand from partners eager for bio-based, high-performance solutions worldwide.

Nearly 90% of the 4 million MT of SAP produced annually is directed towards the $145 billion global hygiene market, specifically for products like infant diapers and period pads. The launch of BAYSE, with its biodegradable features, aims to transform the industry by addressing the environmental concerns tied to the 300,000 diapers that are disposed of in landfills or incinerated every minute. Furthermore, industries outside of hygiene are also seeking non-fossil-based SAPs to fulfill their customer requirements.

By surpassing critical production, commercialization, and sustainability goals, ZymoChem has paved the way for the annual production of thousands of MT of BAYSE, positioning the company to revolutionize the global SAP market.
