Yokogawa collaborates with Shell on Robotics and AI technology for plant maintenance

Yokogawa Electric Corporation has announced the establishment of a long-term agreement with Shell Global Solutions International B.V. (“Shell”) aimed at integrating and advancing technologies for the use of robots and drones in plant monitoring and maintenance.

As part of this collaboration, Yokogawa will incorporate an advanced machine vision tool called Operator Round by Exception (ORE), developed by Shell, into its OpreX™ Robot Management Core. This enhanced software service will be offered by Yokogawa to clients in the energy, chemicals, and other industries.

The Role of OpreX Robot Management Core

The OpreX Robot Management Core is a cornerstone product in Yokogawa's robotics solutions. This software aids customers in maintaining their facilities more safely and efficiently by integrating the management of diverse robot types that traditionally perform plant maintenance tasks. When linked to a plant's control and safety systems, the data collected can be utilized to issue instructions to robots, marking a significant step toward autonomous plant operations. The integration of Shell's ORE technology will greatly expand the range of use cases available to customers through the OpreX Robot Management Core.

Future Developments and Collaboration

Looking ahead, Yokogawa's robotics operations will pilot deployments at two Shell facilities, exploring how robotics and drones can enhance efficiencies in plant monitoring and maintenance.

This partnership marks a significant milestone for Yokogawa's collaboration with Shell at the Energy Transition Campus Amsterdam. Established by Shell in 2022, this campus serves as a collaborative platform for companies, societal organizations, governments, and universities to work on innovative energy solutions for the future. Additionally, Shell and Yokogawa have committed to collaborating on a shared R&D roadmap to further advance and refine machine vision technology, ensuring ongoing innovation and improvement. This collaboration reflects both companies' dedication to delivering cutting-edge solutions to the energy and industrial sectors.
