World’s first Microfibre recycling facility opens

An environmental technology company has introduced a groundbreaking microplastic recycling facility in Cornwall, located in southwest England.

First of Its Kind: This plant is believed to be the first facility of its nature.

Annual Impact: The Cleaner Seas Group (CSG), responsible for this initiative, estimates that it can convert 86 tonnes of microfibres into usable materials for construction and packaging each year.

How It Works

Cartridge System: The CSG center in Bude provides cartridges for consumers and industrial laundries to attach to their washing machines.

Recycling Process: Once filled with microfibres—tiny plastics shed from clothing during washing—the cartridges are returned to CSG by freepost.

Material Recovery: At the facility, microfibres are extracted from the cartridges and processed into materials suitable for construction and packaging, including new domestic cartridges.

Dave Miller, chief executive of CSG, explained that the “plug and play” battery-powered filter is priced at £130 ($175) and can be easily installed on a washing machine without professional plumbing assistance. Each cartridge is designed to last for approximately 100 washes, after which consumers can purchase a replacement cartridge for around £14 ($19).
