TotalEnergies-EREN JV secures land for 200,000 tonne green ammonia project in Morocco

TotalEnergies H2 has entered into a Preliminary Contract for Land Reservation with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) and A.P. Møller Capital to initiate a 1GW hydrogen production project in Morocco.

In collaboration with the Danish companies, the TotalEnergies and EREN Group joint venture (TE H2) aims to commence pre–Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) studies for the Chbika project, which is projected to generate 200,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually for the European market.

Thanks to its geographical proximity and the quality of its wind and solar resources, Morocco indeed has the best assets to become a major partner for Europe in achieving the goals of the Green Deal.

This initiative will establish 1GW of onshore solar and wind capacity to facilitate green hydrogen production through electrolysis using desalinated seawater. H2 View notes that this project is viewed as the initial phase of a “world-scale green hydrogen production hub.”

TE H2 and CIP will oversee renewable energy production, while A.P. Møller Capital will focus on developing the port and related infrastructure.

The signing of this Preliminary Contract for Land Reservation is a decisive first step for the launch of our investment program in Morocco. The Kingdom has the potential to supply affordable and clean energy to Europe while serving its own decarbonised industrial development.

Earlier this year, TE H2 was established to spearhead the development of a hydrogen production project in Tunisia, which also aims to produce 200,000 tonnes of green hydrogen each year.
