Tesco, Veolia, and Groundwork Partner to transform NHS gardens using recycled plastic

Soft plastic packaging, known for its recycling challenges, is receiving a fresh opportunity through a joint effort involving Tesco, Veolia, and Groundwork.

Specifically, everyday items like crisp packets and bread bags will be repurposed into benches, decking, and other outdoor furniture for National Health Service (NHS) community gardens.

Veolia's innovative recycling technology enables the transformation of these hard-to-recycle materials into practical products.

The recycled furniture will be contributed to NHS Property Services' (NHSPS) Social Prescribing Programme, which establishes green spaces near health facilities for patients and the local community.

This initiative addresses two crucial concerns: reducing plastic waste and enhancing public health by providing access to nature.

A large amount of soft plastic gathered by Tesco will be diverted from landfills and repurposed into useful furniture.

This effort aligns with Tesco's 4Rs packaging strategy, emphasizing plastic removal, reduction, reuse, and recycling.

Access to nature through NHSPS' community gardens can help decrease stress, enhance mental well-being, and promote physical activity.

The first garden featuring recycled furniture crafted from Tesco-collected soft plastics will be established at the John Scott Health Centre in London, the capital of the UK.

Additional projects are in the pipeline for various locations across the UK.
