Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Introduced at Cluj Avram Iancu International Airport

OMV Petrom Supplies SAF to Cluj Airport for a Greener Future

Source: Hydrocarbon Engineering

OMV Petrom has supplied sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to Cluj Avram Iancu International Airport, helping reduce carbon emissions in air travel. Since January 2025, aircraft departing from Cluj Airport have used a 2% SAF blend, covering nearly 1,800 flights in the first two months of the year.

OMV Petrom plans to begin producing SAF in Romania by 2028, with a €750 million investment at its Petrobrazi refinery. Cluj Airport is also reducing its carbon footprint with electric de-icing trucks and passenger buses.

SAF, made from renewable materials like waste oils and animal fats, can reduce carbon emissions by up to 80% compared to traditional jet fuel. The EU’s ReFuelEU regulation mandates a 2% SAF use in airports starting in 2025, increasing to 6% by 2030.
