As a waste management provider for over 50 local authorities, SUEZ aims to present its vision for achieving a zero-waste economy through this letter.

The French utility company expressed that delays in key policy reforms, stemming from the Government's lack of clarity, have hindered progress within the sector.

SUEZ and its local authority partners are urging the Government to expedite waste reforms to meet the UK’s environmental goals and facilitate the transition to a circular economy.

The waste service industry is an essential front-line service, delivering weekly collections and daily processing, as well as playing a crucial role in energy generation and materials recycling. It is critical that these important services are not forgotten in decision making, and remain at the heart of environmental policy, so our industry can help unlock more sustainable outcomes.

To turn the UK Government’s ambitions into reality, SUEZ asserts that the waste and resource sector requires a definitive policy pathway, which has not been provided by the Conservative Government.

The letter highlights several key requests, including the need for clarity and simplicity in policy, effective funding and support, and initiatives to encourage behavior change.

It emphasizes that establishing clear timelines and targets for Government waste reforms is essential for timely and effective decision-making by local authorities and service providers. The implementation plan for Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is cited as an urgent example needing clarification.

The letter criticizes the current policymaking process, which has been influenced by competing demands from different departments, stressing the need for a coordinated approach throughout the Government.

We are at critical juncture in the development of a more sustainable, resource efficient economy. For too long, policymaking has been subject to competing demands and asks from different departments, and we urgently need a joined-up approach right across Government.

Additionally, it mentions that confirmed funding support from the Government for waste management, particularly through EPR, is vital for maintaining consistent and high-quality local services across the UK.

SUEZ and its local authority partners are also advocating for a national campaign aimed at enhancing consumer and business understanding of the circular economy and increasing participation in local recycling initiatives.
