This move aligns with a global push to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from aviation, a sector facing increasing pressure to adopt sustainable practices. SAF, produced from renewable sources, offers a viable pathway to significantly lower the carbon footprint of air travel.

"We anticipate a growing demand for biofuels in the oil refining sector, and we are currently working on a related project, which is for the production of SAF," said Kenan Mirzayev, Head of SOCAR Turkey's Oil Refining and Petrochemical Unit. "The project is in the technical assessment phase, and we believe it will be the biggest transformation at the refinery. We have already started working on this project."

The STAR refinery, a modern and sophisticated facility, has the potential to become a major SAF producer in the region. This strategic move could position SOCAR Turkey as a leader in sustainable fuel production, contributing to both Turkey's and the global aviation industry's environmental goals.

Key takeaways:

  • SOCAR Turkey is actively exploring SAF production at its STAR refinery.
  • This initiative aligns with global efforts to decarbonize aviation.
  • The STAR refinery has the potential to be a major SAF producer in the region.
