Qatar starts construction of world’s largest blue ammonia plant

The Mesaieed facility is projected to commence production in the second quarter of 2026. On Tuesday, Qatar’s Deputy Amir Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamad Al Thani officially laid the foundation stone for the largest blue ammonia plant globally, marking the start of construction.

With completion anticipated in the second quarter of 2026, this facility, under the patronage of Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, will have the capacity to produce up to 1.3 million tonnes of blue ammonia each year.

The groundbreaking ceremony took place in Mesaieed Industrial City, attended by Saad bin Sherida Al-Kaabi, the Minister of State for Energy Affairs, along with other government officials, CEOs from related companies, and senior representatives from QatarEnergy.

In 2022, QatarEnergy Renewable Solutions and Qatar Fertilizer Company (QAFCO) entered into an agreement worth over $1 billion to plan and develop the Ammonia-7 plant in Mesaieed.

Blue ammonia facilitates ammonia extraction, an essential element in producing agricultural fertilizer urea, while significantly reducing carbon dioxide emissions compared to conventional, resource-intensive methods.

This new facility is part of a broader production complex aimed at doubling Qatar’s urea exports by 2030, a plan revealed in September of this year.
