This guidance serves as an initiative within the PET value chain, aiming to provide transparency and clarity. It acts as a practical tool to guarantee that recycled plastics used in food contact applications are both safe and traceable.

This guidance is the result of extensive collaboration among experts in food contact regulation, waste management, recycling, conversion, and packaging. It aims to ensure the safety of PET. We developed it to support businesses in meeting the relevant EU requirements.

The document offers a comprehensive interpretation of the legal requirements outlined in Article 6 of Regulation (EU) 2022/1616, converting them into actionable criteria for the collection, sorting, and final pre-processing by operators.

Additionally, it details how non-EU operators must adhere to equivalent standards to maintain parity, which includes demonstrating compliance with EU food contact legislation.
