OMV and Masdar partner to launch one of Europe’s largest green hydrogen projects in Austria

OMV, Austria’s integrated energy, fuels, and chemicals company, has partnered with Masdar, a global leader in clean energy, to create a binding agreement for a joint venture (JV). This collaboration aims to finance, construct, and operate a 140 MW green hydrogen electrolyzer plant in Bruck an der Leitha, Austria.

A Major Leap in Green Hydrogen Production

This significant project will stand as one of Europe’s largest facilities for green hydrogen production, representing a crucial advancement in OMV’s efforts to decarbonize its Schwechat refinery and promote energy transformation. Construction is set to commence in September 2025, with operations expected to begin in 2027.

  • Ownership Structure: The JV will be primarily owned by OMV, with Masdar holding a 49 percent stake.
  • Strategic Partnership: This alliance merges OMV’s strategic leadership in its integrated Fuels and Chemicals sector with Masdar’s extensive commercial, financial, and technical expertise in developing and managing clean energy projects globally.

OMV is already operating a 10 MW electrolyzer plant for green hydrogen in Schwechat and will procure renewable electricity for production, retaining ownership of the generated green hydrogen.

Future Collaborations

This partnership sets the stage for a future strategic collaboration between OMV and Masdar, focusing on green hydrogen, synthetic sustainable aviation fuels (e-SAF), and synthetic chemicals production in both the UAE and Central and Northern Europe. This follows the signing of a Letter of Intent earlier this year in April. The JV is expected to finalize in early 2026, pending completion of final documentation, shareholder approvals, and regulatory endorsements.

The binding agreement was formalized at ADIPEC, attended by distinguished figures including H.E. Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Chairman of Masdar; H.E. Dr. Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer, Austria’s Federal Minister of Economy, Energy, and Tourism; Dr. Alfred Stern, Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of OMV; and Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar. The agreement was officially signed by Martijn van Koten, OMV Member of the Executive Board and Executive Vice President of Fuels and Chemicals, alongside Mohammad Abdelqader El Ramahi, Chief Green Hydrogen Officer at Masdar.
