With a yearly capacity of 40,000 tons, this plant is designed to transform mixed plastic waste into high-value chemicals and raw materials through chemical recycling. It features cutting-edge technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, including an all-electric pyrolysis reactor that ensures zero direct scope 1 emissions during its operation.

The initiative aligns with MOL’s commitment to manage and recycle about 5 million tons of municipal solid waste annually in Hungary, promoting a circular economy.

Moreover, MOL has made substantial investments in plastic waste recycling throughout Central Europe, providing sustainable materials for industries such as automotive, construction, and packaging.

Gabriel Szabó, the Managing Director of MOL Group, highlighted the significance of the chemicals sector in promoting the circular economy and sustainability. By combining their expertise with Lummus, they are incorporating established pyrolysis technology to tackle global plastic waste issues by transforming waste into valuable resources.

The project is part of a broader 2023 partnership between Lummus and MOL to implement chemical plastic recycling in Hungary and Slovakia, supported by Lummus’ Green Circle technology.

This innovative technology streamlines the conversion of plastic waste into chemicals and raw materials, supporting environmental objectives like decreased carbon emissions and improved resource utilization.
