Messer builds green hydrogen plant in a joint venture with the district of Düren

Messer, the largest privately held specialist in industrial, medical, and specialty gases globally, plans to construct a green hydrogen production plant at the Brainergy Park Jülich intermunicipal industrial estate.

This business park focuses on promoting "new energies" and the "energy transition".

The hydrogen facility will be managed by HyDN GmbH, a partnership between the Düren district and Messer. With a 10-megawatt nominal output and the capacity to produce up to 180 kilograms of hydrogen per hour, it will be one of Germany's largest plants of its kind. The green hydrogen generated will mainly fuel fuel cell buses. Currently, five eco-friendly buses are operational in the Düren district, emitting only water vapor during use, with plans to add 20 more by November 2024.

As part of the initiative, NEUMAN & ESSER has been tasked with providing two electrolyzers for hydrogen production and two diaphragm compressors to pressurize the hydrogen. Messer will handle the storage, filling, and quality control of the hydrogen produced.

For Messer, this project is another important strategic step to support our customers in decarbonization. We are involved in the engineering of the hydrogen production plant, will take over the operation of the plant in the long term, and distribute the green hydrogen. With this project, we are making an important contribution to climate protection by reducing environmentally harmful CO2 emissions.

Virginia Esly, COO Europe of Messer

The green hydrogen facility is scheduled to commence operations in autumn 2025, funded by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMDV) with approximately 14.7 million euros as part of the National Innovation Program Hydrogen 2 (NIP2).
