LyondellBasell seeks boost in flexible LDPE recycling by acquiring APK

LyondellBasell is set to acquire full ownership of APK AG, aiming to integrate the latter's solvent-based recycling technology for low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and enhance recycling rates for challenging-to-recycle flexible plastic waste.

Most mixed plastic waste from the consumer sector comprises LDPE, prompting LyondellBasell to address recycling obstacles and supplement its current recycling methods with APK's solvent-based approach.

The innovative technology separates various polymers in hard-to-recycle, flexible plastic waste, producing highly pure materials suitable for packaging, particularly in personal care products, under LyondellBasell's Circulen range.

LyondellBasell's investment in APK led to the acquisition following APK's insolvency in late May 2024, pending customary closing conditions.

This acquisition is anticipated to strengthen LyondellBasell's Circular and Low Carbon Solutions business as part of its sustainability strategy, with investments in plastic waste sorting and recycling operations globally.

APK has expanded its Newcycling technology for post-consumer plastic waste recycling, focusing on flexible, multi-material packaging. The process combines mechanical pre-treatment with solvent-based purification and separation for recycling complex packaging materials.

Furthermore, Borealis aimed at enhancing access to chemically recycled feedstock by acquiring a majority stake in Renasci, a chemical recycling solutions provider. Borealis also partnered with Rialti to increase recycled compounding capacity, reinforcing its circular portfolio with sustainable injection molding and extrusion solutions.
