Under the Solar Energy Plus Programme, approximately 21,000 households are set to receive subsidies for their solar investments, according to the Hungarian Ministry of Energy. While applications are still being reviewed, data from MAVIR, the country’s electricity transmission system operator, indicates that small-scale household systems alone already contribute 2,675 MW of capacity, with the remainder supplied by industrial solar power plants.
The year 2024 saw an extraordinary growth of more than 1.5 gigawatts (GW) in solar capacity-almost equalling the cumulative total installed during the entire previous decade. For perspective, fewer than 30 countries worldwide managed to achieve an annual increase of over 1 GW, according to the Ministry.
Hungary’s revised National Energy and Climate Plan reflects this momentum, projecting that the nation’s solar capacity will reach an impressive 12 GW by 2030. This milestone underscores Hungary’s commitment to renewable energy and its pivotal role in shaping the country’s sustainable energy future.
