Go Circular Survey Results Reveal Industry Sentiment

Ahead of the 6th Go Circular Summit in Rotterdam, the Go Circular Team at Globuc conducted a comprehensive survey to assess the key drivers and barriers in the plastics recycling sector. The results emphasise the industry's reliance on both upcoming regulations and technological innovation to advance circularity efforts.

Impact of Regulations

When asked about the most impactful upcoming regulations on plastics recycling, respondents highlighted the Plastic Packaging Waste Regulation as the most significant, followed by the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive. Other EU regulations on plastics and packaging were also mentioned, emphasising the crucial role of regulatory frameworks in advancing the circular economy. The findings indicate broad industry consensus on the importance of regulations in enforcing recycling mandates and promoting sustainable practices, with companies focused on compliance while maintaining operational efficiency.

Innovations Driving Recycling Technologies

Respondents identified chemical recycling as the most anticipated innovation in recycling technologies, followed by AI in waste sortation, mechanical recycling, and bio-based materials. These advancements are expected to enhance recycling efficiency and product quality. As the industry evolves, AI-driven sortation is set to optimise processes, while bio-based materials offer sustainable alternatives to traditional plastics. The emphasis on chemical recycling signals a shift towards advanced methods capable of handling more complex plastic waste.

Barriers to Achieving Circularity

Survey respondents highlighted several key challenges to implementing a circular economy for plastics in the EU, including the legislative framework, investment in scaling up technologies, and the availability of feedstock. Concerns were also raised about the cost competitiveness of recycled plastics compared to virgin materials, as well as issues with contamination and quality of post-consumer plastics, particularly in the food sector. Effective cleaning and sorting of post-consumer plastic waste was seen as crucial to improving recycling efficiency and reducing contamination.

The survey results will help shape discussions at the Go Circular Summit 2025, taking place from 4-6 March 2025 in Rotterdam. With a strong focus on the impact of regulations, technological advancements, and overcoming barriers to circularity, the summit will provide a platform for industry leaders to explore solutions to the plastics waste challenge.
