The EU is allocating considerable resources to improve key sectors in Turkmenistan, reflecting its commitment to promoting sustainable development.

Beyond environmental initiatives, the EU's program also seeks to enhance the business climate in Turkmenistan. Economic development is prioritized, with particular attention given to supporting micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) led by women and youth.

Turkmenistan benefits from a cooperation facility of 11 million euros covering the period from 2021 to 2024, which focuses on the green economy to support policy dialogue and provide technical assistance in sectors such as methane emissions reduction, energy efficiency, and renewable energy.

Additionally, the initiative assists Turkmenistan in its efforts to join the World Trade Organization (WTO), facilitating the country's integration into global trade frameworks.

These efforts are part of a larger EU-Central Asia strategy.

EU-Central Asia relations are framed by the strategy adopted in 2019, which identifies three priorities of engagement: regional cooperation, resilience, and prosperity. This is complemented by the EU-Central Asia roadmap for deepening ties.

The resilience aspect of this strategy addresses critical areas such as water and energy management, human rights, and regional stability, while the prosperity aspect emphasizes economic connectivity, digital transformation, and entrepreneurship, especially in the wake of the pandemic.

At a regional level, the EU is also executing several Global Gateway flagship projects that benefit Central Asian nations, including Turkmenistan. These projects focus on enhancing digital and transport connectivity, as well as the regional development of essential raw materials.

During the 19th EU-Central Asia Ministerial meeting held in Luxembourg on October 23, 2023, a roadmap for deepening EU-Central Asia relations was adopted.

The EU’s involvement in Central Asia, particularly its collaboration with Turkmenistan, highlights a commitment to fostering regional connections and promoting sustainable development through a balance of environmental and economic reforms. As Turkmenistan advances its green economy and refines its trade landscape, the EU’s strategic support will be crucial in influencing the country’s future growth trajectory.
