During this discussion, it was confirmed that plans are underway for Europe's largest methanol plant, aiming to secure an investment exceeding one billion euros for Estonia and facilitate the transition to clean energy.
Climate Minister Yoko Alender emphasized that a favorable investment decision would be a significant advancement for the nation.
Clean energy means clean industry. The methanol plant coincides with two important goals for the country: Estonia's complete transition to clean energy and the reduction of fossil fuels and thus pollution in the industrial sector. The project helps to develop modern maritime and industry in Estonia, while at the same time strengthening the competitiveness of our economy and reducing the environmental footprint of the industrial sector.
The proposed methanol plant is set to produce 500,000 tons of green bio- and e-methanol annually, serving as an alternative chemical feedstock for plastics and durable building materials, as well as a replacement for fossil fuels.
Production will utilize sustainably sourced forestry residues and green hydrogen generated from offshore wind farms located along Estonia's west coast.
Plans are in place to establish both a methanol plant and an electrolyzer in the Niidu industrial area of Pärnu.
The plans for the future production area of the methanol plant and the environmental impact assessment were initiated in March this year, the deadline for the investment decision is 2026. However, a positive final decision to establish a project in Estonia also requires planning permits and a decision to transfer state land. This is an area where we at the Ministry of Economy are very strongly focusing our attention in order to review whether and where laws can be changed and the time required for planning can be shortened.
According to Minister of Economy and Industry Erkki Keldo, his focus is on modernizing the planning processes associated with this major investment.
Throughout the development and construction phases, the project is expected to generate over 2,000 construction jobs, along with more than 200 positions in the supply chain during its operational phase.
