This investment will bolster EET Fuels' quest to be the most environmentally friendly process refinery worldwide and EET Hydrogen's goal to emerge as the premier low carbon hydrogen producer in the UK. Additionally, it will supply low carbon energy to other industrial entities in the area to aid in their decarbonization objectives. EET Hydrogen Power will operate as an independent division within EET.
The phased development of EET Hydrogen Power aims to achieve a power capacity of 125 MW and produce 6,000 tonnes of steam daily. By substituting hydrogen for hydrocarbons, the plant is projected to slash carbon dioxide emissions by 740,000 tonnes annually. This new facility will replace the current boiler units at Stanlow, currently generating around 50MW of power for refinery operations. It plays a vital role in decarbonizing activities at EET Fuels' Stanlow refinery, with plans to reduce total emissions by 95% by 2030, positioning it as the most environmentally friendly refinery globally.
Launching EET Hydrogen Power shows the progress that Essar Energy Transition is making in delivering against its commitment to put the UK at the forefront of low carbon energy. EET Hydrogen Power helps bring this commitment to life and demonstrates our intention to globally showcase the pathway to decarbonising vital high emitting industries.
Tony Fountain, Managing Partner of Essar Energy Transition
EET Hydrogen Power is a pivotal infrastructure project supporting the decarbonization strategies of the broader HyNet industrial cluster and setting a precedent for future industrial and energy decarbonization. Furthermore, this investment underscores EET's commitment to bolstering high-skilled employment opportunities in the North West region.
We have bold ambitions for Stanlow to become a low carbon transition hub at the centre of the HyNet Industrial Cluster. EET Hydrogen Power will be Europe’s first 100% hydrogen-ready gas-turbine plant which will be supplied with EET Hydrogen’s low carbon hydrogen. This project will create significant benefit by contributing to regional emissions’ reductions targets.
Rob Wallace, Chief Executive Officer of EET Hydrogen Power
The funding towards constructing Europe's first hydrogen-ready power plant is a significant component of EET's comprehensive $3.0 billion energy transition ventures in England's North West. EET encompasses various entities, including EET Hydrogen Power, EET Fuels (owner of the Stanlow Refinery), EET Hydrogen (focusing on developing over 1.35 gigawatts of blue and green hydrogen capacity for the UK market, with future capacity targets of 4GW), and Stanlow Terminals Ltd (the UK's largest independent bulk liquid storage terminal, facilitating the development of transport and storage infrastructure for biofuels and new energies).
