Emerald Packaging replaces one million pounds of virgin plastic with PCR

In 2025, Emerald Packaging successfully replaced over one million pounds of virgin polyethylene with post-consumer recycled (PCR) material. This flexible packaging manufacturer emphasizes that this transition towards PCR aligns with the goals of its industry partners.

Last October, Emerald Packaging teamed up with Idaho Package, Wada Farms, and Walmart to launch the first 30% food-contact PCR bag specifically designed for potatoes.

A similar partnership with D’Arrigo Bros. of California led to the implementation of PCR bags across its entire product range, including romaine lettuce hearts and iceberg lettuce. Emerald Packaging reports that these 30% food-contact PCR bags have successfully removed over 600,000 pounds of virgin plastic from the supply chain.

This milestone reflects Emerald Packaging’s commitment to the environment and our technical ability to deliver high-quality packaging while reducing the reliance on virgin plastics. We’ve worked closely with our supply chain partners and customers to make PCR a viable and scalable part of our product offerings for those who are seeking sustainable options that meet performance standards without compromising environmental values.

Emerald Packaging highlights that incorporating PCR materials can help divert plastic waste from landfills and lower carbon emissions associated with virgin plastic production.

As the largest manufacturer of plastic packaging for fresh produce in the United States, Emerald Packaging has recently played a key role in shaping legislation in California aimed at enhancing the recycling infrastructure.
