In anticipation of the Go Circular Summit, a webinar was held for plastic packaging specialists to delve into the European Union's ambitious new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). Experts from Interzero provided valuable insights into the PPWR's circular economy targets, particularly its focus on incorporating recycled materials in packaging. A key topic of discussion was the introduction of new Europe-wide fees linked to packaging recyclability, a measure designed to incentivize businesses to adopt eco-friendly materials and design practices.

Interzero brings over 30 years of experience in developing and implementing customized waste management and recycling solutions.

The webinar emphasized the transition of packaging lifecycle financial responsibility to manufacturers and retailers.

Key takeaways from the event included:

  • Eco-fee modulation drives sustainable packaging and EPR compliance
  • Meeting recyclability targets is essential
  • Success requires collaboration and robust recycling infrastructure

"The ultimate goal is to decrease environmental impact and promote the circular economy," said Franziska Ziegler from Interzero Recycling Alliance. Julian Thielen added, "Eco-fee modulation shifts the responsibility to companies for sustainable packaging design."

The discussion emphasized the importance of strong recycling infrastructure for achieving true recyclability at scale, especially for common plastics like polypropylene and polyethylene. A case study demonstrated circularity's potential through successful integration of post-consumer recycled plastic in packaging.
