E.ON unveils state-of-the-art substation in Várpalota

E.ON Hungária Group officially inaugurated a transformer substation in Várpalota. The new substation, fully automated and remotely operated, was built as part of the EU-backed Danube InGrid initiative. The investment totalled HUF 4 billion, with two-thirds financed by E.ON and one-third co-funded by the European Union.

Replacing the former “INOTA” high-voltage switching station, the facility marks a major step forward in the modernisation of Hungary’s energy infrastructure. It significantly improves network flexibility and reliability across the region, while also enabling more efficient integration of residential solar energy systems into the grid.

This substation is a key milestone in our ongoing efforts to develop the power grid of the future in Hungary. Through our record investments under the Danube InGrid programme, we’re preparing the network for growing electricity demands and ensuring long-term energy security for our customers.

Ádám Katona, Deputy CEO of E.ON Hungária Zrt

The substation will also play a strategic role in powering the Várpalota Defence Industrial Park Complex, where production of 30mm medium-calibre ammunition commenced in 2024.

The Hungarian government is firmly committed to strengthening our domestic defence industry and supporting the local economy. This new substation ensures the Defence Industrial Park can meet its significant electricity needs efficiently and reliably.

Zsolt Kutnyánszky, State Secretary for Force Development and Defence Policy

The Várpalota substation is one of 12 new or upgraded facilities E.ON is delivering between 2021 and 2025 as part of the Danube InGrid project. Greenfield substations have already been completed in Öttevény, Gyermely, Kisbér and Zalaszentgrót, alongside the expansion of the Székesfehérvár Dél substation. Later this year, E.ON will also complete work on the Veszprémvarsány substation and continue construction on a facility serving northern Szombathely.

Smart, sustainable network developments like this one are vital for the country’s competitiveness. They reduce environmental impact, support renewable energy adoption, and improve the resilience of power supply for families and businesses alike. These developments are being supported nationwide through major government programmes, including the Jedlik Ányos Energy Programme.

Attila Steiner, State Secretary for Energy at the Ministry of Energy

With around 150 transformer substations operating across its service territory—which includes Transdanubia, Pest County, and Budapest—E.ON Hungária Group continues to play a central role in building a smarter, greener, and more resilient power grid for Hungary.
