Construction of German-based Svevind’s $50bn green hydrogen project in Kazakhstan has started.

Seeing participation from German Federal President, Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Prime Minister of Kazakhstan, Alikhan Smailov, a test drilling ceremony was held yesterday (June 21) as part of the construction.

The project is planning to build 40GW of wind and solar production capacity to facilitate the production of up to two million tonnes of green hydrogen or 11 million tonnes of green ammonia per year.

Located in the Karakiya distraction of Mangystau in the west of the country, the geological drilling marks a new stage in the development of the project by obtaining data for analysis of underground rocks to establish the next stages.

Based on previous announcements, the project is expected to reach full production capacity in 2032, with a 255,000 cu m per day desalination plant set to supply feed water for the 20GW of electrolysis.

Last October (2022), Svevind’s subsidiary, Hyrasia One, secured an investment agreement defining parameters, land availability, infrastructure and more, however said a final investment decision (FID) for the $40-50bn project isn’t expected to be made until 2026.

Furthermore, the ceremony say Hyrasia One sign a contract with Genesis, subsidiary of Technip Energies, to carry out preliminary feasibility engineering and design studies to help steer technological decisions and conduct detailed planning.

It is hoped the project will increase Kazakhstan’s capability to supply large volumes of hydrogen or ammonia to European and Asian markets.
