Clariant and OMV announce sustainability collaboration

Clariant, a company specializing in sustainable chemicals, is collaborating with petrochemical company OMV to provide ethylene with a reduced carbon footprint in response to the growing consumer demand for eco-friendly options.

Specifically focusing on Europe, this partnership aims to help both companies achieve their sustainability goals and satisfy their customers' carbon reduction strategies, as stated by Clariant in a press release.

For Clariant, this collaboration signifies progress in their initiative to offer ethoxylates with a low carbon footprint. Starting in 2022, Clariant has been supplying bio-based ethoxylates through Clariant India Glycols Specialty Company Ltd. (CISC).

Since 2021, OMV has been concentrating on producing chemicals and chemical feedstock in a renewable and circular manner at its refineries in Burghausen, Germany, and Schwechat, Austria. OMV has been steadily increasing the capacity for sustainable products, reaching 200,000 metric tons. The company aims to transition to low-carbon operations, with the goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050.

Through its integrated business model, OMV connects various parts of the value chain, ensuring a more flexible and reliable supply from bio-based to chemical recycling sources. This approach reduces CO2 emissions and is validated by the ISCC PLUS certification for the mass balance approach.

Clariant and OMV intend to explore and implement new strategies to achieve sustainability goals in the ethylene supply chain. As part of this collaboration, the companies will exchange research findings, employ a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology for unified approaches, and establish detailed CO2 reduction plans. This includes jointly assessing the potential for collaboration in ethanol-to-ethylene technology.

Both Clariant and OMV are participants in the UN Global Compact, the world's largest corporate sustainability and social responsibility initiative. This partnership is anticipated to assist Clariant in meeting its emissions reduction targets for operations and supply chain activities by 2030, aligning with the Science Based Targets Initiative.

Clariant's objectives, in line with the Science Based Targets Initiative, aim to decrease Scope 1 and 2 absolute GHG emissions by 40% and Scope 3 emissions by 14% from 2019 to 2030.

OMV's target is to reduce Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 30% and Scope 3 emissions by 20% by 2030 compared to 2019 levels.

In addition to sustainability objectives, this agreement will promote collaboration to support the CO2 reduction plans of industry stakeholders across Europe.
