This cutting-edge material is utilized to produce plant clips for crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers. These clips boast durability and flexibility while also providing an eco-friendly end-of-life option. After harvesting, the clips can be collected along with plant waste and sent to industrial composting facilities for biodegradation, effectively minimizing harmful microplastics in green waste—an issue typically associated with conventional polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene (PP) clips.

During the upcoming Fruit Logistica event in Berlin from February 5 to 7, BASF will highlight the capabilities of this biopolymer at Hall 1.2, booth C-23. Successful tests of ecovio® 60 IA 1552 have already been conducted at Renewi’s industrial composting facility in the Netherlands, where the clips and green waste decomposed within six weeks in accordance with ISO 2020 standards.

BASF’s dedication to sustainable farming practices is reflected not only in the eco-conscious design of its plant clips but also in the product's performance under various environmental conditions typical of greenhouses. The clips are compatible with standard PE or PP production machinery, facilitating easy adoption by manufacturers. Furthermore, ecovio® 60 IA 1552 has received FDA and European food contact approval, ensuring compliance with strict safety regulations.

BASF is committed to expanding its biopolymer portfolio to promote sustainable agriculture. This includes products like ecovio® T 2206 and ecovio® M 2351, intended for twines and agricultural mulch films, respectively, aiding farmers in waste reduction and enhancing productivity.
