Baker Hughes to provide CO2 compression technology for Eni’s Liverpool Bay CCS project

Baker Hughes, an energy technology firm, has announced that it has secured a contract with Saipem to provide carbon dioxide (CO₂) compression technology for Eni's Liverpool Bay Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Project in the UK. The order was finalized in the first quarter of 2025.

As part of this project, Baker Hughes will deliver three state-of-the-art CO₂ centrifugal compressor trains equipped with electric motors, along with a Lufkin Gears gearbox. This comprehensive compressor package will facilitate the re-injection of CO₂, drawing on Baker Hughes' extensive expertise in Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) technologies.

This initiative is part of Saipem's transformation of a conventional gas compression and treatment facility at Point of Ayr, North Wales, into a cutting-edge CO₂ electrical compression station that enables permanent CO₂ storage in offshore depleted fields beneath Liverpool Bay.

Were proud to support Saipem and Eni with our advanced, proven compression technologies in a critical project that will deliver sustainable energy development in the UK by decarbonizing industry.

Alessandro Bresciani, senior vice president of Climate Technologies Solutions at Baker Hughes

The Liverpool Bay CCS project, which has recently achieved financial closure, will serve as the backbone of the HyNet Cluster. This cluster will transport carbon dioxide from capture facilities throughout North West England and North Wales via new and refurbished infrastructure to secure and permanent storage in Eni's depleted natural gas reservoirs located under the seabed in Liverpool Bay.

HyNet stands out as one of the world's most advanced CCS clusters, poised to make a significant impact in reducing emissions across various industries in North West England and North Wales.
