This initiative aligns with its development priorities as a green growth nation and a provider of green electricity and gases by 2030, as stated by Azerbaijani Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov during the "Ministerial Dialogue: Expanding investments to triple renewable energy use and double energy efficiency" event at COP29, according to Report.
The minister announced that the foundation for a 240 MW solar power plant will soon be laid in the green energy zone of East Zangazur, in partnership with BP. This plant will play a crucial role in decarbonizing Sangachal, one of the largest oil and gas terminals worldwide. By 2030, the commissioning of 2,250 MW of solar and wind power plants will elevate the share of renewable energy in installed capacity to 35.5%. This surpasses the previous target of 30% and represents over a sevenfold increase in the contribution of solar and wind energy to the energy system.
Shahbazov emphasized that a key strategic goal during this phase is to create an additional 5 GW of energy capacity, ensuring its supply to Europe through the Caspian-Black Sea-Europe and Azerbaijan-Türkiye-Europe corridors. Furthermore, the establishment of the Azerbaijan-Central Asia green energy corridor will facilitate renewable energy flow from Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
As these regional green energy corridors connect and direct energy to Europe, Azerbaijan is poised to make a significant impact on the transition to green energy from Asia to Europe, fulfilling global commitments by 2030. The successful implementation of these initiatives relies on strong unity and support from all countries, institutions, and sectors. It is vital to meet our responsibilities, mobilize financial and technological resources, and act decisively for our future. Now is the moment to collaborate and transform COP29's global energy objectives into reality!
