Arla reaches major milestone towards recyclable packaging and zero virgin plastics

Arla, the largest dairy cooperative in the UK, has recently made a significant move towards providing fully recyclable packaging and eliminating virgin plastics from its product range.

The dairy leader announced a groundbreaking achievement in the milk category, as it has transitioned its Arla Cravendale and Arla B.O.B 1-liter bottles, produced at the Stourton facility, to post-consumer recycled PET (rPET).

Arla is committed to creating fully circular packaging that contains no virgin fossil plastics, and this new bottle will reduce the use of nearly 900 tonnes of virgin fossil plastics.

This is a massive achievement and the culmination of years of scoping and planning with our partners at Logoplaste and Wipak UK. On Arla LactoFREE – this process has taken approximately four years to develop – in partnership with Wipak UK. These are the latest in a series of changes made by Arla on packaging, with the most recent announcement being the introduction of clear caps across our private label milk. We are also launching a carton line for fresh milk from our Stourton site in Leeds. But we’re not stopping there, as we will be introducing more changes across our branded portfolio, as we continue to move towards zero virgin fossil plastics.

Moreover, Arla LactoFREE cheddar will now feature packaging made from a mono material, providing a recyclable option that meets OPRL guidelines.

This marks a first for UK cheese blocks, utilizing mono material in a high-speed, multi-jawed packing machine.
