Aekyung Chemical to build 15,000 tons terephthaloyl chloride plant

Aekyung Chemical has announced a record-breaking investment of 96.7 billion won to establish TPC mass production facilities, crucial for aramid fiber production, by the end of next year.

This significant investment decision was revealed through a public announcement on the same day by Aekyung Chemical's board.

Construction is set to commence shortly at the Ulsan Petrochemical Complex, the second site of Aekyung Chemical's Ulsan plant in Ulsan Metropolitan City, to create facilities capable of producing 15,000 tons annually.

TPC serves as the primary component of aramid, a high-strength material known as 'superfiber' used in applications such as tire cords, optical cables, and aerospace materials for electric vehicles due to its lightweight nature compared to steel, yet boasting over five times the strength.

Projections indicate a 9.1% annual growth rate for the domestic aramid market and a 4.1% growth rate for the overseas market by 2036.

Since the mid-2010s, Aekyung Chemical has been dedicated to TPC research and has developed its innovative "light method" technology to reduce pollutant emissions, contrasting with traditional methods that release harmful gases. Following the operation of a demonstration plant in 2020 and the creation of a prototype in November of the previous year, mass production is scheduled to commence in Korea for the first time in January 2026 upon the facility's completion.
