During a press conference, Sakamoto highlighted that Rogun HPP is a critical priority for the Tajik government, underlining its importance for the country's energy independence, regional stability, and efforts to combat climate change.
ADB has been invited to join a consortium of financial institutions that are funding the project. Tajikistan has requested $500 million in assistance, and the bank is currently evaluating this proposal.
In 2024, ADB provided $220 million in support to Tajikistan, which funded six projects in sectors such as agriculture, energy, health, public administration, and transport. The bank plans to approve four new initiatives in 2025, including a project focused on digital agriculture to enhance food security.
Additionally, ADB is developing a five-year strategy that aligns with Tajikistan’s long-term development objectives. This strategy will support glacier protection initiatives, as Tajikistan takes the lead in regional climate efforts. An international conference on glacier conservation is set for May in Dushanbe.
As Tajikistan aims for improved energy security, Rogun remains a cornerstone of its economic and environmental strategy. ADB’s ongoing involvement indicates strong international support for the project, which has the potential to position Tajikistan as a significant energy exporter in the region. If approved, the $500 million funding would be a major advancement toward completing one of Central Asia’s most ambitious hydropower projects.
